New year, *real* you

Welcome to 2020! The start of the year is a time when many of us set resolutions to “improve” themselves. Sometimes we choose to add new things to our lives, sometimes we choose to take things away, sometimes we choose to make minor adaptations. Often to help us find a “new you” that we’re encouraged to find.

Whilst I’m a supporter of making lifestyle changes to live a more fulfilling life, I’m taking a stand against the “new you” ethos this year. You don’t need to be a new person or even a new version of yourself. You don’t need to be anything other than who you already are.

However, you may well benefit from discovering or re-discovering the real you. You may appreciate a reminder of who you truly are (and how amazing you really are). 

2019 was a huge year of self-discovery for me. I learn more about myself every single day, and I’m grateful for that. My life experiences and activities last year accelerated this process. I didn’t “do” self-discovery in an academic way like I have in the past; I lived my life in an open-minded exploratory way. And I had lots of fun along the way. It wasn’t all plain-sailing (I cried a *lot* last year and made some very big decisions which didn’t feel easy at the time), but I truly felt like I experienced the ebbs and flows of life and I want to continue to do that. I’m coming out of the year with much more clarity about who I am and what is important to my life. 

I’ve been sharing parts of my journey, and I’ll continue to do so. I’m also helping others on their own journeys of self-discovery. When you know who you truly are, life situations become much easier and enjoyable – and I’d love for everyone to feel more of that. 

I’m currently working with some incredible women through my group coaching programme, and in just the first month I can already see how their self-discovery journeys to finding their true selves are helping them live a more fulfilling and comfortable life. I’m so excited about where their journeys will take them. 

So what can you do to support your own journey of self-discovery? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Regularly reflect on your life experiences and desires (this doesn’t need to take a lot of time or be incredibly formal, just do what works for you)
  • Try new life experiences and approach them with an open mind
  • Stop doing things that don’t feel right for whatever reason that might be
  • Surround yourself with people who inspire you to be the person you love to be
